installed digiKam 4:3.5.0-Oubuntu 10 and dependent packages from Synaptic Package Manager.
Graphics/digiKam selected - no action
Operating system Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS. (LUBUNTU)
I have used digiKam successfully in previous versions of Ubuntu.
(In your LQ tutorial you refer to using 'how-tos' -where are these?-and search for occurence of 'digikam' - have attempted this without success)
(Your tutorial suggests I introduce myself - I have used Ubuntu for many years but only in GUI. My Unix knowledge is near zero - whenever I attempt to understand descriptions in the forums I get stumped by acronyms and terms that are common to other Linux users)
I hope you can help.
hello all at linuxquestions
first off would just like to say how useful this resource is, Ive been setting up a VM server in lubuntu recently and this site has given me alot of help and helped me get it off the ground. Im certainly a linux noob and only been messing around in linux for a week, so please forgive me for any derpy terminology
anyway, I installed lubuntu onto a VM as an intention to use it as a server
to be honest it was an ISO I had lying around and due to it being "light" I just went for it
however I have since discovered ubuntu do a flavour known as "ubuntu server"
first off..
what is the difference between ubuntu server and regular ubuntu/lubuntu etc?
is it just that it does not load a full fat gui?
if there is a big diffrence would it be easy to "turn" lubuntu into ubuntu server? since they are sort of based off each other?
secondly, lubuntu loads up lxde upon boot, I was wondering if there was a way for it to just boot up without the gui with the option to turn it on via shell (startx etc)
this is because I have little ram to play with but I also like to use the GUI sometimes when needing to do certain admin stuff, for example I use steam via Wine to download steam games sometimes
I was pondering the idea of installing ubuntu server and then downloading the lxde desktop and going that route, but Im not sure if it would bring any benefit opposed to just modifiying my current lubuntu installation
any advise or tips would be welcome
thanks!
In August of this year I'm going to build a dedicated linux audio computer. I have been using ubuntu studio on my cheapo dell optiplex to learn linux and to get used to different programs and see which ones I need.
Lubuntu seems to use less cpu than ubuntu studio for the same program. I don't want any other programs on my system part from ardour, jack and a few misc MP3 players. All audio. It says that ubuntu studio is a low latency program, does this mean that Lubuntu isn't low latency? It seems that Lubuntu is running the program easier but I'm nervous to go with it because I fear it may be missing certain components to keep it less needy of cpu power.
What are your thoughts on this.
Hey all,
I've got an HP Pavilion dm4 Notebook that's been like a good friend to me in the past, but hasn't been running as well as it used to. I decided to move on to something new that I knew would work - some form of Linux. I chose Lubuntu, as I had heard so many good things about it and wouldn't need to run loads of processes.
I ran through the installer from a flash drive and installed Lubuntu 14.04 onto my machine, and was then prompted to reboot. Now I'm stuck on the Gnu Grub page, where *Ubuntu is listed instead of *Lubuntu. Whenever I hit Ubuntu to start, screen cuts to black, I see the HP logo and BIOS login note, and am dropped back in front of the Grub page. This is my first true experience with the Linux kernel (I've played with Raspbian).
Does anyone have any insight as to what's going wrong? I haven't yet been able to login and am unsure regarding where to go.
Thanks

New member that finally installed an open source OS.
I am competent to create an image on DVD or USB, first introduction to Linux was in 1999. Basic DOS knowledge.
Looking for guidance on this new endeavor on a basic level as I am not a programmer.
Hi,
Although I've been using linux several years back. I am not a fast learner so here goes a question I should understand long ago.
I have installed fresh Ubuntu 15.04 netinstall.
After that install xorg and windows manager.
Sound was working.
Then I wanted to check the mixer and I used to alsamixer, and strange the app was not there.
I have tried all alsa* binaries but none of them was installed.
How can I findout what sound system is running?
Thanks
Hi,
In December I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 and then to Ubuntu 14.04.
I have always used Picasa as my photo manager, and all my photos each with individual headings for the last 7 years are on Picasa 3.0. Today I tried to import my last holiday photos into Picasa, and something called Shotwell photo manager opened and started importing 7 years of my photos. I stopped the process quite quickly, as I had never heard of Shotwell, and I just wanted to add my new photos to my existing photo library in Picasa.
I feel that I should be able to choose which photo manager I want to use, I realise that Picasa is a Google programme and quite old, and Shotwell is Linux and new, but I am familiar with Picasa and do not want to change to any other programme.
Please can somebody tell me in simple terms how to keep Picasa as my default photo manager and get rid of Shotwell.
Any help will be much appreciated, thank you.
I have visited many forums and know hat this is a very frequently asked questions. I have just installed Lubuntu 14.04 on an old Toshiba NB505. I have tried the
rfkill list all command.
It shows that I have a Hard Block. I have connected with an Ethernet cable and have updated.
The drivers were removed and were attempted to be re-installed in Windows but did not seem to work either.
any added suggestions. I read another post that suggested that I reload Windows as a partition and try adding the drivers again.
p.s. I should add that I am true Newbie and last took a Computer class in 1988...yes
that is correct 1988
Am running a P4 @ 2.66 with Hardy Heron 8.04.4 .
Have googled a decent amount of commands for terminal to find out that alone.
Saw posts from 2004&9 that said to use Mysql server or Postgresql server to get the benchmark packages to cook the box.
I am going to try and read everything through commands, then decide on new distro.
1st Mint looks easy enduser. Ubuntu is looking kinda' commercial.
Ubuntu still looks like the distro to follow.
If you want to tell me a package that the synaptic will load and let me use, I thank you. All the us.ubuntu.olderversions. server addresses are worthless.
THX again

Hello Sir,
I am new in linux. I want to install ns2.35 on ubuntu 14.04.So for that I have to install ubuntu 14.04.So which option is preferable for installing ubuntu whether by using vmware or by dual booting & also suggest me that whether ubuntu 14.04 is compatible for ns2.35 or not.
So, when I use Synaptic or the Lubuntu Software Center, it obviously finds all these required packages for me...
But right now I'm trying to install a program called rarcrack that I got from SourceForge. It says I needs these things:
> glibc 2.4
any POSIX compatible operating system [sorry Window$ isn't]
pthreads
libxml2
and finally: 7zip, unrar, unzip
I don't think I have some of that stuff. I'm trying to compile the program. I enter a "make" command and it automatically enters a GCC string and then tells me that it doesn't have xml2-config in some /bin/ directory or other
So basically, where do I get this stuff. I've searched synaptic for them, and it doesn't seem to know what they are.
Maybe one of you guys can tell me!
