Is It Time For A Modem Funeral?

I have a USB fax modem, and it logs the following errors when turned on.

I know it is impossible to know for sure, but think it is hardware related? Any chance to salvage?

Also, what are the steps to start troubleshooting?

Thanks

Mobile Broadband Connection NOT Working In Elementary OS

Just dual botted Linux mint with elementary OS just because I wanted to try it out to. I use a USB mobile broadband connection in my linux mint 17 and it work fine but doesn't work in elementary OS. I can't get wireless connection to work either. Everything works fine in linux mint but when I plug the USB mobile broadband modem in elementary OS, it wont even detect the USB modem. I guess I just need to install some drivers and update to ge my connection to work but I can't do that without an internet connection. Please help me. I need to also try out this linux destro.

Output Of "netstat -s | Egrep '(active|passive)'"?

If you run this command on your computer, how many active and passive connections openings are you typically supposed to have? Specifically, for a firewalled home PC behind a wifi router/cable modem combination. Can someone explain the purpose of this command?

Is LFS The Right Way To Build A Software Update Disk?

I'm very used to working on a linux machine, programing in Unix terminals all through college. That said, I have never needed to work with linux distributions or doing more than some apt-get software installation.

I need to make a CD. I need a machine to be able to boot from this CD. I would like there to be a unix terminal that runs a script automatically. This script must be able to mount an NFS drive, do simple networking (TCP/IP), and update the software on the machine running it through deleting/adding files.

I guess I need an .iso for a linux distro that has files and a script already on it that can be used to update a bunch of these specific machines?

Should I go through the LFS project in order to learn how to do this?

I'm pretty lost and need some help. Thanks!

String Concatenation In UNIX / Shell Script

Hi,

I am new to UNIX - i wrote this below script based on the requirement. But i am stuck at the concatenation (at the second last step of the code)

The below code is working fine till the concatenation(second last step) - I need to concatenate Hello to the "physId" e.g. - The filename is UM123456789.20150503 - i am extracting M123456789 and i need to append "HELO" to it at the end. But as per the below script - when i am using the concatenation, it is overwriting the M123456789 and the output thus becomes HELO456789. I am trying to get the output as - M123456789HELO - where am i going wrong?

on the terminal i checked - echo $0 and it gave -> /bin/sh. Hence i wrote the below code.

#!bin/sh
absolutePath=/abc/data/abc_unix/stg/decrypt/*.*
filepath=$(echo ${absolutePath%.*})
echo "$filepath"
filenameext=$(echo ${filepath#/abc*decrypt/})
echo "$filenameext"
file=$(echo ${filenameext#.*})
echo "$file"
extract_physId=$(echo ${file:1:9})
physId=$(echo ${extract_physId})
echo "$physId"
key="$physId"HELO
echo "$key"

Linux Accepped Address Needed For My Charge Controllers .

The two charge controllers for my solar system are connected to my router allowing my computer to access them for data gathering. Using the address required in Windows is "tsmppt13190256/" for one of them ( tsmppt plus the serial number ). This address works with all browsers with windows .

Using the same browser on various Linux machines yields "web page not found" Morningstar ,who makes these excellent controllers , says they support only Windows. I've tried using the numbered ( 4 groups of 4 digits ) equal and even the "tiny URL" but nothing works .

I've tried adding ".,com " and HTTP:// "

How can I how can I get my Linux browsers to accept this address ?

Thanks a lot .
