Hard Disk Damaged?

I tried to install Debian 8 and 7 but I get error message at partitioning stage:

"Failed to create a file system
The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda) failed."

After that I couldn't advance further.

I booted from a live Debian and the HardDisk actually shows there with some older files on it.

I tried to install even Windows but from the start it shows the computer doesn't have a Hard Disk Drive so the installation stops right at the start.

Any ideas what is wrong and is there any fix?

Apache2 Won't Start

Action 'start' failed.
The Apache error log may have more information.
failed!

The apache error log is blank and doesn't have any information.
Please help me.

Linux Fails To Boot After Refind Install

Hello all,
I'm having an issue booting my linux installation after installing refind. I googled the issue but nothing seems relevant to fixing it.
Refind starts up fine and I can see linux (vmlinuz...) but when I select it to boot it says

Failed to open file: install\initrd.gz
Trying to load files to higher address
Failed to open file: install\initrd.gz

It is a dual boot system with Win8. It is an encrypted installation if that makes any difference. Both systems are efi.
How might i go about fixing this? Any pointers and/or relevant threads appreciated

Package Operation Failed

Ubuntu 14.10 runs great on my laptop but I think I have dependency problems because EVERY time I install or remove software I get the following error message. However everything seems to run just fine...

"Package operation failed"
"The installation or removal of a software package failed."

...and details shows a massive list of gobbledygook with a lot of:

"insserv: Starting vpnagentd_init depends on rc.local and therefore on system facility `$all' which can not be true!"

I can post the whole message but I'll wait for feedback first.

Failed To Bring Up Eth1 - Debian Wheezy

Hi,

I tried to configure my ethernet interface on a Debian Wheezy VM, but I've a problem. When I try to restart /etc/init.d/networking, I've no error message.
But my eth1 interface isn't up and when I try to up it with : ifup eth1, it return me :

Code:
root@debian-main:/# ifup eth1
RTNETLINK answers: File exists
Failed to bring up eth1

My /etc/network/interface file is :

Code:
auto eth0
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

iface eth1 inet static
        address 192.168.10.1
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        gateway 192.168.10.254

Eth0 is my internet interface and eth1 is a local interface. I want to install a DNS and a DHCP server on eth1 to be able to connect client with this VM and give them an ip adress.

Thanks guys

What Is The Rsync Flag To Ignore Permissions

I am using Rsync to backup files to a another machine, the users on my fileserver do not exist on the backup server so Rsync throws errors about the permissions. It copies the files fine but I want to get rid of the errors and have Rsync ignore the permissions when backing up.

/backup is a mounted ftp directory

Below is the current command and output:
Code:
root@Fileserver:~# rsync -av --delete /shared/fileshare/ /backup/backup

Gedit Not Opening From Terminal - Not Authenticated

I have just installed a new debian OS and want to change a file.
For some reason, gedit didn't come pre-packaged so I installed it with apt-get.

When I use a terminal as root, gedit won't open. I get the following error message:
Code:
gedit grub
(gedit:3679): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session
manager: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication
protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication
failed

Gedit will open page files on the desktop - but not on the terminal.
Is this because I haven't done something with the new install or should I remove gedit and reinstall?

Hi,

I am new to using linux and using it just to run cadence virtuoso software. I mount the /apps directory from another server to my pc and then source cadence setup file. However, i get the following error.

[fulhaq@mypc ~/Desktop]$ source /apps/cadence/setup.csh
[fulhaq@mypc ~/Desktop]$ virtuoso &

[fulhaq@mypc ~/Desktop]$ dlopen failed to open 'libdl.so'

Can somebody suggest how i can remove this error. Do i have to install libdl.so file. if yes then how?
