How Do I Dual Boot Fedora 17 And Fedora 21 Using Grub?

I am going to attempt to dual boot both fedora 17 and fedora 21, as my printer can print from FC17 but not from FC21 - posted about this issue in the hardware forum.

I am rather surprised at the level of competence of people posting here, even though it says newbie forum - so I think that this is possibly where I belong too.

I have set up grub to see my fedora 17 kernel - the only problem is, that the root filesystem needs to belong to the fedora 17 kernel as opposed to the fedora 21 kernel. I can't see myself changing fc 21's fstab to have the old lv root device mounted - as /etc belongs to the root partition of fc 21.

I did change the device to reflect the old kernel's root lv partition in the /etc/fstab (fc17), but this doesn't seem to do it.

Does someone know what I am missing?

Configuring A Dual Boot Arch And Fedora Installation

I have setup a dual boot system with Fedora 21 and Arch Linux. The problem is that Fedora doesn't see my encrypted Arch installation. The installations are on separate partitions and do not share anything apart from hard disk space. I have run the following commands as root in Fedora:

Code:
grub2-install /dev/sda

Code:
os-prober

Code:
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

When I rebooted, Fedora was the only OS entry showing in the GRUB menu.

There was a suggestion from one of the members of the Arch forums that I should write the entry myself into /etc/grub.d/40_custom and then re-build the grub configuration or take the Arch entry from Arch's /boot/grub/grub.cfg and just paste it into the 40_custom in Fedora and rebuild.

How do I boot from a live Arch USB stick into the installed Arch and do as stated above? How would it work? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Fedora 21 Hangs On Boot After YUM Update

This morning I was watching some online TV shows on CBS.com. After watching two shows, I tried to watch a third. Instead of a video, I got a screen saying I needed to install Adobe Flash. Obviously, Adobe Flash was already installed--that's how I had watched the first two videos. I decided maybe the problem was CBS wanted a later version of Flash. That's when I ran the YUM update.

Everything seemed to download OK except for firefox. It must have been downloading from a mirror somewhere on the other side of the planet because the download rate was something like 7kb/s. The ETA was something like two hours. I decided to end that terminal session and started the YUM update over again. This time it recognized it had already downloaded all the other packages and the download for firefox was several hundred kilobytes per second. After that the update seemed to go OK.

Unfortunately, when I rebooted and chose the new kernel in the grub list, the boot appears to hang just before I'm supposed to get a login screen. Normally, booting takes only a minute or so, but now all I get is a blinking cursor in the upper left corner, even after waiting 10 minutes. I hit the power switch to turn the computer off and rebooted.

This time I hit the escape key to watch the boot progress. These are the last three lines:
[ OK ] Started Command Scheduler
Starting Terminate Plymouth Boot Screen...
Starting wait for Plymouth Boot Screen to quit...

Then it hangs. Hitting the escape key has no effect. CTRL-ALT-DEL reboots.

According to grub, the newly updated kernel version is: Fedora (3.19.5-200.fc21.x86_64) 21 (Twenty One)

I tried another YUM update. Here's the results:
[root@XXXXX ~]# yum update
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, langpacks
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* fedora: fedora.mirrors.tds.net
* rpmfusion-free: mirror.us.leaseweb.net
* rpmfusion-free-updates: mirror.us.leaseweb.net
* rpmfusion-nonfree: mirror.us.leaseweb.net
* rpmfusion-nonfree-updates: mirror.us.leaseweb.net
* updates: repo.atlantic.net
No packages marked for update
[root@XXXXX ~]#

I had been using the video driver available on nVidia.com on the previous kernel. (That kernel still works because I'm able to type this.) It's very likely not the latest version of video driver since it has been a while since I installed it. Could this have something to do with the hang?

What should I try to do next? Thanks for reading this.

Yum Setup To Use Different Repository

Hi,

I have a Fedora 21 system, but I would like to update it using repos from Fedora Core 4.

I have found this article - How to Use YUM in Fedora Core 4 - that allows changes to be made to the yum settings, so that you can run yum on Fedora 4.

Is it possible to setup Fedora 21 to point at this repository over the normal one?

I realise that this is not good practice, but I would like to test out a theory to see if this will work.

Unable To Login On Runlevel 3 In Fedora 21 Xfce After Moving/restoring Usr Dir

I'm not a total linux newbie, but I figure this is a newbie mistake, so here it is.

I'm running fedora 21 xfce on a triple boot system (using grub to select the os), so if it's at all possible to avoid a reinstall that would be very awesome.
What happened:
I ran out of space on my root partition (lvm). Tried to figure out how to resize the root partition while tired, gave up, decided to move /usr to my home partition and create a symlink. Copied /usr to /home/usr, deleted /usr. Unable to create the symlink now (duh! as I said, I was tired), booted into liveusb disk to create the symlink. Couldn't boot after that and gave up for the night. This morning I was clear enough to figure out resizing the partitions, so I did and then copied /home/usr back to /usr. Rebooted and everything seems normal until I want to login. Logging in just dumps me back at the login screen, wether I use root, user runlevel 5 or runlevel 3, no matter. In runlevel 3 there might be an error message but it flashes by so quickly I can't read it. Authentication does proceed, because logging in with a wrong username or password gives the proper error.
Google has not provided me with any useful hints, so I'm at a loss. Can someone please help me out?

Many thanks,

Willem

Centos 6.4 Does Not Boot - A Kernel Panic Issue For Initialization

Hello

I have installed a CentOS 6.4 on VmWare.

Now, after several days of using it, it suddenly does not boots. There is a problem with its initialization, here is the error:

Kernel Panic : Unalble to init. Try passing init= option to the kernel.
Pid 1 : Swapper not tainted.

I have used CentOS.iso to rescue it, but it still does not solve it.

My grub.conf contains:
