Hi all,
I'm not quite a newbie having been using Linux for around a year now and think I know some of the basics at least. In the main it does what I want, some things better than they ever did on Window while some things frustratingly more awkward!
I have a load of music files that I'd like to search through and transfer some to the external sd card of my android phone. This was something that was a doddle during my Windows days but seems unbelievably difficult now. Back then I used a media player I loved, Mediamonkey, and could simply drag and drop whichever tracks I wanted, or right click and move to a device that way. Sadly this doesn't work too well with WINE though so is fine on XP through Virtualbox, apart from a lack of USB function.
I'm using Linux Mint 17.1 with a KDE desktop.
When I plug my phone into a USB port, it is recognised straight away as an android phone and I can navigate around it with no problems in Dolphin. I could look for each individual file and transfer them that way but with around 30,000 mp3s the task would take quite some time!
None of the media players I've tried so far recognise the phone or the storage on it.
I've installed Windows XP on Virtualbox and have Mediamonkey on there with all my audio files. I can't seem to get Virtualbox to recognise any USB devices so I can't transfer files that way either.
I find it annoying that, in effect, Android is a variety of Linux yet connectivity between the two is so complicated. Airdroid has been the best way that I've found but that's not an option.
I've been trying for 4 hours now and have got nowhere. If anyone can help I'd be grateful Thanks
I was recently given a Samsung Convoy 3 phone as an insurance replacement. One of the phone's features is that you are supposed to be able to transfer data directly from the phone to your computer using a USB cable, but the phone's data transfer program (Mass Storage) has been hanging at the step where it contacts the computer. I am running Linux Mint 13, and I've determined that the operating system recognizes the phone when I plug it in, but it doesn't mount automatically. Verizon and Samsung have not been helpful.
Today I figured out how to mount and unmount the phone manually using mtpfs, but I wasn't sure what program to assign to open it, and the one I chose didn't work. Now I can't figure out how to change the program assignment -- no "open with" option comes up when I right-click on the icon on my desktop -- and I'm also not sure what program to use.
I'm willing to do the whole data transfer via command line if someone can walk me through it. I'm not very experienced with command-line prompts yet, but I've loved the ones I've learned so far.
Thanks!
Using a Raspberry Pi w/ Debian
Read the manual and several "how-to"s and am getting nowhere
vsftp is running and making a log file. I can get to the Pi with putty or SAMBA
Ultimately want to be able to both(I) ftp in under the "pi" user to access files remotely and (II) have people sending me huge files ftp them in anonymously
Have tried (I) the ftp client in Windows 7 Internet explorer 11, (ii) the ftp client in the Windows 7 "map network drive" UI, and (iii) ES file explorer on my Android phone.
The android phone tells me there is no server there. Windows 7 gets no password challenge, gives no error indication, but does nothing useful. The vsftpd log file shows some attempt by the Windows machine, nothing for the Android.
Config file and log file attached.
The Android is trying to use port 21, the config file mentions something about port 20. Which ports do I need to forward in my router to enable remote access?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks. Jonathan
Hi all,
I'm aspiring new Linux Administrator and I have been given tasks of looking at various Linux servers and clients. As a newbie, I often forget/confuse about the series of steps I should take to accomplish certain tasks against various types of Linux distro. So I have some large no of notes in text file format, which i often refer to.
Earlier I used Microsoft OneNote, which can be used to view/update/create notes from my home PC, my Android phone or through various web browsers at client's site. But now, I am not able to access notes simply because, (1) MS SkyDrive is too slow, (2) Many of Linux machines have no GUI, (3) I'm not allowed to carry my Android phone inside server rooms, etc.
Long story short, I should be able to access my text notes in terminal from any machine which has internet connection. And also if I may extend, also in my android phone.
What I have with me is one .com domain with hosting space for next 1 year.
Any Idea on how I should proceed will be really appreciated.
Many thanks.

I am running linux mint 17 and every few times I put new files on my mp3 player the files end up being corrupted, and when I connect to my windows machine it says that the mp3 player has some bad files on it. Can anyone shed some light on this problem,I use Dolphin file manager.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Hello Everyone
I have installed Ubuntu Server on a 500 GB drive formatted as EXT4.
Of of my Media, movies, music and pictures are from Windows PC's formatted in NTFS.
As all of the computers connecting to the server will be windows based will NTFS be fine or will I have to reformat them to work. The two media drives are 2 x 2GB Sata drives.
Could you tell me if this setup would work or will I have to reformat and and transfer the files to a new filesystem.
Also as a file server whats the best linux file system to use so it will work with windows PC's in a lan flawlessly.
Thanks for you expertise.

how can i share LAN internet from my LINUX PC to android phone through wi-fi
hey folks,
I always wonder why many programs from these operating systems are not cross platform? I mean, all three are using a linux kernel.
Sometimes I would like to run a gnu/linux program on an android/chromebook device and an android/chromebook program on gnu/linux. There are a few cross platform programs that I can think of like: Firefox, google chrome browser, and Netflix.
I know very little about android's and the chromebook os's inner workings, but I do know that both have many close source apps and proprietary software and drivers.
What else is on android and the chromebook os that makes it different from gnu/linux? And why do certain companies prefer to port programs to android and the chromebook os over gnu/linux?
I am having a problem when trying to start my Android emulator (versions 2.2 or 2.1 or 4.3).
It says this:
"Starting emulator for AVD 'Android4-3'
ERROR: 32-bit Linux Android emulator binaries are DEPRECATED, to use them
you will have to do at least one of the following:
- Use the '-force-32bit' option when invoking 'emulator'.
- Set ANDROID_EMULATOR_FORCE_32BIT to 'true' in your environment.
Either one will allow you to use the 32-bit binaries, but please be
aware that these will disappear in a future Android SDK release.
Consider moving to a 64-bit Linux system before that happens."
Now, I am launching this Android Virtual Device from a GUI, and I'm actually somewhat confused as to how I'm supposed to find what command to use to to launch the emulator and not the GUI (and more generally, how to find what commands to use in a GUI situation).
Sorry if I missed some important information, I am pretty new to Linux.
Hi, i am newbie. I have problems to transfer files between Linux to Windows. Here goes mi situation.
I have already install pscp in windows, i tested it typing pscp in command line, its ok. I have read that pscp is primordial to perform the transfers.
The problem is the next: i am located in /root, trying to transfer install.log to c:\temp, doing the next: pscp.exe root@192.168.x.x: /root/install.log c:\temp
and the result is:
-bash: pscp.exe: command not found
I am searching in the internet for a solution but with no success yet. Could you help me please?
