The Write Command

I understand how to use the write command but I'm unsure about how to set up the users. If my friend in inThe uk and I'm in the USA is it possible for me to write to him via the terminal with the write command or is it only for a local network within my office?

How do I set up the people who I want to talk with via the write command? I'm looking online but everyone seems to address the question presuming the users are already set up.

Normal Linux User Recursively Write Access To Apache Document Root

I tried adding two users in apache group and given 775 permission to Document root but user is not able to write into files in DocumentRoot

Tried adding user and DocumentRoot Folder in sudo file but not able to do it recursively

please help

Thanks for reply,
I have already given chmod 775 -R DocumentRoot - for recursively writting permission
You have told to add user in www-data group and chmod 775 -R to DocumentRoot
usermod -a -G www-data <user1>

How can users in www-data can able to write in DocumentRoot which has apache:apache owner and group
please clarify...

Done below steps to solve this:
1) I have created a new group webdata and added required users in this group
2) set sticky bit to document root with below command
setfacl -m g:webdata:rwx -R /path/to/documentroot/
this command will set rwx permission to DocumentRoot so that members in webdata can have full access but still DocumentRoot user and group will be apache

Getting Variable Integer Values From Grep

I want to write a Python script. In order to write it I need to figure out how to access the values associated with my signal level and bit rate.

If I use the following command

Code:
iwconfig | grep 'Signal level'

I get:

eth0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

Link Quality=70/70 Signal level= -38 dBm

Obviously, I don't want Signal level. I want whatever it happens to be. In this case, it happens to be -38. Ditto Bit Rate...How do I grab -38 from the command line?

Terminal-table/table Terminal - What Is It?

I am reading a gnuplot pdf FAQ. In section 3.13 it says: "This requires you to write contours into a temporary file using the table terminal." Then I google and all I get is terminal-table. It says: install terminal-table by applying this command:

Quote:
$ sudo gem install terminal-table
What is it all about? What is a table terminal? What is a terminal-table? It looks like terminal table is to print tables in a terminal, right?

Thanks, - A.

How To Run A Command In Another Command?

I am not sure how to ask this, sorry.

if I had a code like this

Code:
# grep -a ": " md5list.txt | cut -f2,3 -d

How can I run the command basename for each line of the output?

basename {(grep -a ": " md5list.txt | cut -f2,3 -d )}

EDIT: A little more clarity on what im doing:
I didn't realize that 'md5sums' was a link to a nice formatted page. So I copied all packages here and put them into a text file. I decided to write a script that put all of these in that format.

So basically, even though I have already ran the md5sum -c 'md5sum-list' I still want to finish this small project because I am learning a ton.
