I have not been able to get an Icon to launch the program from my desktop.

Hi guys, my computer is downstairs in the cold basement and I wanted a way to practice my online terminal course in the comfort of my rocking chair upstairs in the pleasant surroundings. I downloaded a terminal app for the iPad and it's asking me for some info. Could any of you tell me where to find it please?
Host - I typed in host name into the terminal and it gave me the details at the prompt.
Username - which username? Do I make one up or the username for the computer I'm trying to log into? How do I find the username?
Password - which password? The one to log into my home?
I guess these things work via some network/ remote thingy??????? It's not bluetooth so Im guessing I need to somehow log into that computer as a guest or admin or something?
Your clueless pal

I just bought a refurb computer at the recommendation of a forum member and now I need a manual. Which is the best online ebook to learn Linux for very very beginners! Like ' how to knock the computer on' beginners! A book that doesn't presume I know what a distro is! I'm joining the Linux community and very excited to steep myself in all things Linux but I need to start at the very beginning otherwise I'll end up getting disillusioned by the scale of the Linux dictionary.
Of course I am very Mac competant and not a complete computer unsavvy guy but I believe in order to really know something you have to go back to the basics. Please recommend a basic online books preferably in iBooks.
I look forward to driving you all crazy over the next six months with my ABC questions.
Thanks guys
Hi there,
I'm just starting to use Linux Mint 17 and practising commands. I have wallpapers.tar.gz in the Downloads folder and want to extract it to my Pictures folder.
I type tar -xzvf wallpapers.tar.gz -C /Pictures but it says no such directory. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for looking.
When I bring up Linux Ubuntu I would like to get a login prompt and choose as whom to log in. Then I would like to say startX or something like that and to get into X-windows. As I am in X-windows I would like to, do a right mouse click or something and chose “open a new terminal” or something. I used to do that all back over decade ago. Then I haven’t used Linux for over a decade. Now I got a box with Ubuntu, but …
When I bring it up I automatically get logged in as “Owner” and I get into interface that limits what I can do. Specfically, I don’t see how to become a different user, how to get into command line mode, how to run X-windows and open multiple terminal windows. And I would like to decide myself when to invoke some fancy GUI interface, instead of being forced into it..
I found one way to do some of what I want: ctl-alt-functionkey. But when I log in and do startX from there the right mouse click does not give me “open new terminal” option.
Could somebody help me out? Thank you very much in advance.

I am completely new to Linux. Ready to get as much advice and tips as anyone can offer. First, which version should I install? Are the free online versions safe and functional? I am running windows 8.1 on a laptop. Would prefer to install, if possible, any type of Linux on USB or disk. If not possible, use a partition. Everyone has to start somewhere, right?
Hey Everyone,
I'm pretty new to linux, I'm a long time mac user, and have been using a Mac Mini as my Plex and wordpress server for some time. Looking at Apples latest generation of Mac Minis, it looks like they no longer are a great option for servers. So here's my setup and wants in a nut shell.
Currently my Mac Mini hosts 3 wordpress sites and is my Plex server. The machine is running OS 10.10.2 Yosemite with Server running, and has 2 Drobo Gen 2 devices attached via Firewire 800.
I use 1 Drobo for my Plex Media, and the other drobo is used for machine backup.
Reading online, Looks like the Drobo 1 and 2 Genereations only show up as 2TB max segments on Linux So I would scrap the Drobo cases and put all the drives internal into the linux server tower.
I want to build a new Linux server that can take over these tasks. So my wants would be, A linux server that can host more than 1 wordpress site, run plex, and would have a RAID setup similar to Drobo, where I can add more drives or replace smaller/failed drives easily enough (doesn't have to be automatic rebuild like the drobo, as long as its possible and not to tricky to do)
what Linux Server OS and other options should I be looking at?
thanks everyone in advance!!
