Can Not Get IP Lease - Even With Wicd

When I'm at home, I get an IP lease immediately every time, and have no problem getting to the internet over WiFi

When I go anywhere else, most of the time I cannot get to the internet over WiFe. If I try to set up a connection using wicd, I get to the point where it says "getting an IP address" but it usually does not go beyond that point. Once in a while, if I try to connect manually several times with wicd, I might get connected.

What do I need to do?

I'm using LUbuntu 14.10

Not Able To Connect To Internet Via 3G Router From Linux

Hello, My issue is very common but, not able to resolve it.

Issue I am facing with my Linux (RHEL-5 32-bit) machine, where I am not able to connect to internet.

DWR-113 - D-Link Router is configured for 3G dongle (Vodafone India) - This setup is done via WiFi and not using the provided LAN cable from Win7 machine.

Internet is working absolutely fine in case of Wireless but, at same time when LAN cable is used internet is not working. [Able to ping to Router IP i.e. 192.168.0.1)

Similarly, from Linux box, ping to Router IP is working [LAN plugged] but, Internet not working. IP of linux machine: 192.168.0.60

Also, able to get the console connection of Linux from Windows box..[Windows connected to Router via WiFi and Linux connected to Router via LAN cable]

Please suggest how to get rid of this problem so that Internet will work on Linux via LAN cable.

Many Thanks,

Sharing Internet Through Data Cable From A Mobile That Is Already Sharing Via Wifi

Hello everybody,

I am seeking help regarding sharing internet connection. I would be greatful.

I have;
A Laptop : Samsung RV509, i3, 300GB HDD, 3GB Ram, Dual boot Windows7 & LM 17 cinnamon 32bit. WiFi & Bluetooth available. A Desktop PC : Celeron CPU 2.4GHZ, 40 GB HDD, 1GB RAM, LiveUSB-LM 17 cinnamon 32bit, No WiFi hardware available, No Bluetooth hardware available. A mobile phone : Nokia Asha 500, WiFi & Bluetooth available. An old USB data cable: with which the mobile phone can be connected to the computers. I have successfully connected and transfered data back & forth, and also shared/connected Mobile-Broadband-internet to both Laptop and Desktop.

What I have been doing now is; I have an internet connection to my Laptop with an external modem and Ethernet. Its working fine. I have an unlimited plan and so I want to share this internet connection on the mobile phone too; instead of incuring extra cost by connecting to the internet directly through the phone. I am successful at that. I can share this internet connection on my phone through WiFi.

Now, what I want to do is; without buying any extra hardware, to share this same internet connection on my Desktop PC, too.

What I tried is; I searched the web, but didn't find any solution. Now I am here. Please kindly help me.

Thank you & Regards

Anil

Dhcpd On Opensuse 12.1 Does Not Hand Out Addresses

Hi all

I am trying out this dhcp server setup on opensuse 12.1 but it does not seem to be working.

I have eth0 configured to be 192.168.10.1 in a /24 network.

I want to hand out the rest of the address in the same subnet as dhcp addresses. (So everything from 10.2 to 10.255). The default gw is defined as 192.168.10.1, and routing table looks correct. and I only have eth0.

When I start the dhcp, and connect it to the client machine, I see nothing on the wireshark trace. no DHCP discovery or ack messages. And the client machine just keeps trying boot from the network via the network interface. I know I got the right interface (there were blinky options in the bios that lets you identify the correct interface) and the cable is not a problem. (If the cable were a problem the client boot message would say "media fault ... please check media...") instead.

Here is my dhcpd.conf file. I went through man dhcpd already, and cleaned out everything that I apparently don't need. (The original file was copied from a more complicated setup that had multiple subnets and dhcp relays.)

Code:
###################simplfied
linux-kzy1:/var/lib/dhcp/db # cat /etc/dhcpd.conf
authoritative;

ddns-update-style none;
ddns-updates off;

#Information about the host

  range 192.168.10.2 192.168.10.255;
}

  filename "pxelinux.0";
  next-server 192.168.10.1;
  host testserver1 {hardware ethernet a0:d3:c1:f7:f2:64;}
}

this is what /var/log/message and /var/log/rc.dhcpd.log says:

not very interesting stuff or useful, but I found some other messages that is very interesting:

linux-kzy1:/home/test/Documents #

Which ties into my first question: dhcp no free lease: I googled a bit, I found a post from a guy on ubuntu who has the same error message and the suggested course of action is to change ownership of the lease file to dhcpd and give it 777 for permission. Which I thought is weird, because the lease file is automatically created by the dhcpd itself, so it really shouldn't be a permission issue shouldn't it? (Anyway, tried that didn't do a thing.) right now it is owned by root/root and has this permission: -rw-r--r--.

2nd question: once the client gets a reply from my dhcp server saying no free lease, does it remember this dhcp server as no free lease and does it persist throughout reboots? Because I tried rebooting the client a number of times and I don't see anything on the wireshark at all. You will notice the time stamp on the last "no free lease" message is not as late as the other messages from the var/log/messages or rc.dhcpd.log and I rebooted the client and the dhcp plenty of times since 17:01:38.

Thanks for all your help in advance everyone.

Network Manager States That I Am Connected, But I Cannot Connect To Any Webpage

Hey all,

I just did a Debian minimal install and am using the package network-manager-gnome to manage wifi. I should also mention I'm running OpenBox. Anyway, network-manager shows up just fine in my systemtray and it lets me connect and displays that I am connected in the system tray. However, when I try to connect to a website it will just say "connecting" for a very long time before timing out. Note that my ethernet works perfectly.

If it helps, this is what shows up in iwconfig after I've "connected" to a network through network-manager:

Code:
wlan0     IEEE 802.11abgn  ESSID:"The Stack Resident Wifi"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:5.24 GHz  Access Point: 54:3D:37:02:A5:CC
          Bit Rate=13 Mb/s   Tx-Power=15 dBm
          Retry short limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=33/70  Signal level=-77 dBm
          Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:154   Missed beacon:0

I've searched in many places and I couldn't find someone who had a similar problem. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

Bad Subnet/netmask , DHCP Installation

Hi,

I'm on WMware workstation with debian Wheezy.
I have a problem when a restart the Dchp.
It said Bad subnet number/mask combination.

This is logs:

root@debian-main:/# /etc/init.d/isc-dhcp-server restart
dhcpd self-test failed. Please fix /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf.
The error was:

exiting.

And this my file dhcpd.conf:

# A slightly different configuration for an internal subnet.
subnet 192.168.10.1 netmask 255.255.255.0{
range 192.168.10.1 192.168.10.15;

option broadcast-address 192.168.10.255;
default-lease-time 600;
max-lease-time 7200;
}

For me it's the good subnet number/mask combination.

Can you help me please?

Thanks you,

How To Change IP Address Of Remote Machine?

Hi all

This is bothering me too much, please tell me how to change IP address of remote machine while using ssh successfully.

I follow these steps:
1. connect to remote server using 'ssh root@server'
2. Edit '/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0' file
3. issue 'service network restart' command... (at this point ssh connection gets hanged)
4. Break from hanged ssh connection (<ENTER>~.)
5. Wait for some time to let service restart
6. Then finally, ssh with new ip address.

All is fine, but last time, i did something wrong while assigning new IP address, and after service restart, remote server didn't get new ip address - and now i cant connect to remote server.

Fortunately, i had a friend there, who helped me correct the problem so that i can connect again.

But what to do when there is no one to help? Is there other way i should approach this problem?

Thanks

How To Edit Wifi Connections

Hi
I am not brand new to Linux but have been using a very popular Linux distro which has pretty much made everything easy for me in day to day use
I do distro hop quite a bit on my spare laptop and have tried many distros i came across Antix 13.2 which i really love and is a superb distro in terms of speed and increasing my learning curve in linux systems and was easyish to set up via wicd (just involved writing in wlan0) and that was it
One thing i can never get the hang of though and would love a complete idiots guide to is the wifi set up in some distros i have discarded because i just do not understand how to set it up
This evening i tried Sparky Linux on a usb and would love to have tried it but the wifi problem surfaced again
a box comes up re edit connections and from there i have no idea at all what to do what i normally do is disregard that distro and move on! But i would like to be able to input the info to get it working..any ideas please
Many Thanks

Testing Tails Distro For The First Time And Unable To Connect To The Internet With It

Hello,
I am trying out a GNU-plus-Linux distribution called "Tails" for the first time. Tails is the distro that provides anonymity for the user by forcing all network traffic to go through the Tor network system. I am testing out Tails version 1.4.
Tails is a live DVD disc. It boots in live mode directly from the DVD and optical drive.
However, once I was booted into the desktop for the first time, it seems to not have been able to automatically find and configure my internet connection.
When I hover the pointer over the twin PC's icon in the system tray at the top right hand corner it says "No network connection".
Then, just to make sure, I opened the "Tor browser" and it gave me an error message that says "The proxy server is refusing connections".
Then to make triple sure, I opened the "Unsafe web browser" and it gave me the error message that says "Error No DNS server was obtained through DHCP or manualy configured in Network Manager".
So as a new user of this distro, I'm not sure on where to go and what to do. So any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
