I Need To Learn How To Install Software On Linux.

Hi. Sorry to be so stupid, but I just managed to load and install this Linux (which I really like a lot) on my previously windows <--(bad) system.
But now I need to upgrade some software (like Adobe flash), and I have no clue how to do this. I understand I should go to my original linux distrubutor, and select software thru them (my "Linux distro").
But actually, it's been awhile since I did the install, and I dont exactly remember where I even got this distribution. (I know, I'm dumb--sorry).
Is there a way I can look at my linux system files and see who my distribution is thru, and where is their website. Or would it be easier if I just went thru the whole download and install of linux again <--(not really looking forward to that).
Or even, am I wrong about going thru the distro to do installs/upgrades?
Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated.

The New Guys On The Block

Hi guys, as I wait for my refurb to arrive to install Linux I have been doing a lot of research. I said in a previous post that I needed a cheap pc to install Linux that will run at least as fast as a Mac or pc. I have been doing some research and I want to know if anyone has used the evolve so distro, the sparkylinux distro or the korora Distro.

It seems to me that these will be perfect Linux light distros to run on an old machine.... Or am I sadly mistaken?
Thanks

Need Advice: Reinstall Or Dump Linux Mint?

Since I have not found a solution to my intermittent boot problem I'm thinking of reinstalling Linux Mint, switching to a different Linux distribution, or turning back to the dark side, i.e. Windows. This was my first Linux install and I was really impressed with the OS and the applications. I like Linux Mint but I want a reliable computer and if I cannot even get it to boot properly then that's a long-term concern.

The problem with a reinstall of Linux Mint is that I don't know what to do differently. I don't know what, if anything, I did wrong the first time. Of course, switching to a different distribution is also a crap shoot since I don't know what went wrong with Mint. I don't really want to go back to Windows but it's been a stable, reliable OS for me for years.

Anyone have any advice?

Now Im Really Fricken Confused!!!!!!

Zorin Dock Launch (ie Quick Launch) Instalation And Use

Hello Linux users. I'm described as a newbie (which i am) but you've never seen a newbie as new as I am I'll wager.

I installed Zorin 9 OS core as an alternative to Microsoft crap that I'm really tired of, (cost as well as never vending bugs). Yes I know I'll still have bugs with linux but at least the patches and fixes in any Linux distro is for the benefit of Linux users and not to sell more Microsoft crap.

I have evidently been reasonably successful to install the latest Zorin 9 with my desktop environment choice. However I'm used to (and like) the MS so called quick launch bar at the bottom of the XP desktop installation, from which I can place links of any app or web link to instantly go there. Correct me if I'm wrong but Linux has basically the same quick launch function which I can choose from the software center and I've tried to select and install at least 2 named Cairo-dock and Docky for example. I did choose and install those according to the Linux prompts but I notice no change in the "Avant Window Navigator" at the bottom of my desktop, and when i try to drag a web link or app to that bar it either flips back to the link spot i saved on the desktop, or there's no action at all. In other words I am not able to put a link or app on the AWN, which AWN does not serve as a dock launcher at all (except for my Firefox browser icon WHICH IS INSTALLED at the left bar location and does work to quick launch Firefox when I left click on it.

So how do I not only properly install that notorious quck launch app in linux Zorin 9 OS and finally drag or otherwise install my links there?

thanks for any advice or replies.

Linux From Windows- Bash ,shell

Hello am a newbie to linux,
I tried to install cygwin for windows, all i need is i need to write a shell program for a batch file i already have, I am not able to do this.
My batch file content looks like

SET JAVA_HOME=..\jdk
SET CLASSPATH="%CLASSPATH%;../lib/A.jar;../lib/slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar;../lib/slf4j-simple-1.6.1.jar"

%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java.exe com.A ../conf/C.properties

PAUSE

this works perfectly, I try to write a shell program which is failing when i check it through cygwin. i am not able to set the export to java_home.
The pblm i face is say my current directory where my shell program is 'Z'
then i want to get back to 'y' where X has two sub folders y and z

-Z (where shell pgm resides)

cd ../ or any combination of cd doesnot work in my shell script.

Please help me. Any help is greatly appreciated

Trying To Install NTFS-3g From USB Stick

Hi I'm very new here and looking for some very basic help (I think).

I've been trying to install NTFS-3G onto a old media player so I can label 4 HDD's so there always appear in the same place after booting up and viewing the samba output over my network.

I have downloaded NTFS-3g and unpacked it onto a USB stick (there are other file on it that can be removed if required).

The version of Linux is Linux version 2.6.12.6-VENUS (root@138_korsen) (gcc version 3.4.4 mipssde-6.03.01-20051114).
The version of BusyBox is BusyBox v1.1.3 (2010.07.12-08:31+0000) multi-call binary.
(I know both are old).

If I type/run fdisk -l I get the response

Disk /dev/sdb: 8024 MB, 8024752128 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 975 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 976 7836640 7 HPFS/NTFS
Partition 1 has different physical/logical endings:
phys=(974, 254, 63) logical=(975, 158, 14)

dev/sdb1 is my usb stick and at present the only usb/hdd connected.

My problem is how on earth do I get into the usb directory and the install the program(command by command please Linux newbie very).

Any help or advice now matter how basic would be very greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Andy

Continue Antergos Installation

Hello

I'm trying to install arch based distro antergos on my system. I have slow but stable internet connection (512 kbps). But unfortunately, in the area I live, there is frequent power cuts. This is creating problem for me. It takes at least 4-5 hours to install antergos linux. Every time installation almost finishes, there will be a power cut, and i have to start it again. This happened 4-5 times, and i have wasted 2 days just trying to install this distro. Still unsuccessful. This incomplete installed linux boots to 'Grub Rescue' screen.

Is there any way I can continue installation from where it went down?

Really be grateful, if someone tells me how, or atleast redirect me to any knowledge base.

Thanks
