Change Boot Menu Time?

On my partner's duel boot computer (Windows 7 & Linux Mint 17.1) after an update and grub upgrade the time the choices menu stays on screen is only a few seconds.

How do I extend that time from a few seconds to about 15 seconds that will give her enough time to choose her OS of choice?

Thanks,

gael

Flashing Screen On Dual-boot Config.

Hi Guys, I installed a dual boot config. on a 160 gb hdd. The first choice in grub menu is Linux Lite (latest distro) and the second boot choice is Mint 17.1 Rebecca. I'm encountering a situation that when I boot into LL the system boots OK. Then when I try a restart and boot into Mint it seems to be doing OK until the end of the boot process at which time the screen flashes the Mint logo and then goes dark-then flashes then goes dark every second or so-endlessly. After a while I'm sometimes able to get Mint to finish booting by hitting the esc key. Any ideas how to make this screen flashing situation stop and do a normal boot?

Update: Solved the problem by changing the resolution settings to coincide with those of LL....flashing stopped!

LL and Mint IMHO are two of the best distros for a Newbie to "get their feet wet." - I know, I am that Newbie.

Triple Boot Problem: Unable To Add 3rd System With Bootable USB

Hi All,

I recently decided to tryout Linux and dual booted my laptop (originally just had windows 8) with Xubuntu. Now I want to try out Kali Linux. So I downloaded Kali and made a bootable USB, the problem is that when I try to boot from the USB it just brings up the grub menu asking me to select Xubuntu, Windows etc. I've changed the boot menu in the BIOS but that has no effect.

I've tried booting into windows and the restarting by holding shift but when I select the usb option it just says:

"system doesn't have any USB boot option. Please select other boot option in Boot Manager Menu"

and then returns to the grub menu. I don't understand because I used a bootable usb to install xubunto?

I'd be really grateful if anyone can help me out with this!

Thanks

Grub-mkconfig Menu Changes

I want to change the menu on a Suse 12 Enterprise system.
I edit the /etc/default zip12grub.conf file execure grug2-mkconfig. Then reboot the system and no changes occur. The zip12grub.conf seems like the correct file to update so I am at a loss as to what the correct process would be.

Set Up Chrony With Local Time Source In The Server

Hi Guys,

I have set up chrony with local clock, but when I issue chronyc tracking the leap status shows its not synchronised

[root@redhat_1 ~]# chronyc tracking
Reference ID : 127.127.1.1 ()
Stratum : 10

Skew : 0.000 ppm
Root delay : 0.000000 seconds
Root dispersion : 0.000001 seconds
Update interval : 0.0 seconds
Leap status : Not synchronised

I edited the chrony.conf file and added " server localhost iburst" and uncommented the "local stratum 10 " to enable sync with local time source.

Let me know how to sync this with my local server time.

UEFI Problem, GRUB2 Problem, Blank Screen Problem, :(

Hi, So im quite new to linux and im not surprised as iv tried before to check it out and failed then (old computers problem) but i decided to have another go on a new comp recently.

UEFI mobo
Nvidia geforce 770 as output.

I need a duel boot of win7 & mint. Win7 is installed.

UEFI has caused me so many problems its just beyond me ! (i had never heard of it before i brought this comp)

booting Mint from a cd/dvd works fine.

booting from a USB fails with a blank or locked up screen at the first mint logo. (many tests with dif methods of creating live USB)

Installing mint with grub over the top of win boot loader fails , i get no options to choose between win & linux it boots straight to linux and then fails (same error as above)

I have a small SSD with win7 , there is not a lot of space on it so i want to install mint 17.1KDE on a different HDD.

After a month or so of reading testing reading testing etc i ended up getting mint installed on partitions i created on secondary HDD but i had to keep the windows boot loader in place and use easyBCD.

However now i get the choice of win7 or linux and windows still actually works (breakthrough ^^) BUT linux just crashes at boot (at the first logo) and then the monitor looses all signal?

I am soo frustrated. Mint will run of a CD but i can not get it to work in any other way , please help

Thx.

Linux Mint 16 Will Not Finish Booting From My Usb

I am trying to boot Linux Mint from an 8gb Sandisk USB. I changed my boot settings and it boots into what I believe is called grub? I am given two options, Boot Linux Mint, Boot Linux Mint (compatibility mode). When I select either of them all I get is a black screen. I've tried many things to get around this, messing with my graphics card settings (within grub), different USB's (another 8gb and a 32gb), I tried Ubuntu and that just doesn't boot at all I go straight back to my UEFI settings. I'm very new to Linux and I don't just want to hop in, I just want to boot from my USB whenever I want to play around with it. Thank You

Note: I'm running windows 8.1 currently on a ASUS N550JV laptop. I've been using the UUI from Pen Drive Linux.

Dual Booting Windows 7 On Already Installed Linux Mint 17.1

Hi,

Before installing Linux Mint 17 to the entire HDD of my HP p2 1317cb desktop, it was running a preinstalled windows 8 OEM UEFI. After several failed attempts of dual booting(no grub menu and boots directly to the windows 8) i then decided to do a erase all and install Linux option. Now i have Linux Mint 17.1 working flawlessly, so far. What i want to now do is, dual boot a windows 7 installation alongside my Linux. Please advise on the best way to do this.
Thank You.

Note: Before doing a clean install of Linux i disabled secure boot, enabled legacy, and disabled fast boot.

How To Load Grub Menu

I've just compiled my own kernel (debian), but I have no idea how to boot it. I don't know how to get to the grub menu. I've tried holding shift down at start up but it doesn't work! When I hold down esc it asks me what I want to boot?

I've read that I have to edit the file /etc/default/grub - but I can't since don't have it..

Does anyone know how?

Problem Setting Up Samba -- Korora 21 (Fedora)

I've got my new system up and running. It's a nice fresh change after running Linux Mint for the past 4 years. Now comes the time of setting things up the way I like them.

As part of my setup, I have a all of my DVD's backed up onto my computer so that I can use a media server in the house. I run XBMC at my TV's with a central samba server (my computer) holding the movies.

In LM, all I had to do was right-click the directory "sharing" and select SMB share and type in the name. Everything else was done for me. This doesn't seem that simple.

Here's what I've done:
1. Menu > Administration > Samba
2. Entered in all the directories to share, under the BASIC tab I've selected visibile, writeable. Under the ACCESS tab I've selected a user (see below).
3. I've created a system user called xbmc with the password of xbmc.
4. I've created a samba user called xbmc with the password of xbmc.

Still not working. So, I went into the shell where I manually started the smb service:
# systemctl start smb.service

So, I went back to Menu > Administration > Samba > Preferences:
Set workgroup to WORKGROUP (but it automatically changes it to lower case after I exit).

Drop to terminal and restart service with systemctl.

I go over to my XMBC installation and try to connect to the source and it finds the SMB share. I click on it and after about 30 seconds a window pops up asking for login credentials. I enter xbmc/xbmc and after about 30 seconds it just cycles through. XMBC doesn't offer any messages, so I went downstairs to my Windows machine and tried to connect to a network drive. I enter in \\IP\share-name and after a few seconds it asks for login credentials. I enter xbmc/xbmc but then it fails with "bad username or password".

I'm not sure what I need to do to get this working.

Here is my /etc/samba/smb.conf file:
