Hdd Install Not Booting Puppy Linux

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum and linux too.
I thought of installing a lightweight distro of linux and did some research on the net where I found people recommending Puppy Linux. Plus it is (theoretically speaking) possible to run it from a USB (flash) drive which I decided to try out but it seems like it's not that simple a task as a lot of people (all over the internet) say it is.

What I tried so far is this: installing it into a thumb drive using unetbootin follwing a youtube tutorial (which basically showed how to download an iso of puppy, use unetbootin to make the thumbdrive bootable and install puppy on it). It didn't work. The USB wasn't recognized as a bootable device. I know for sure it can be booted from it since I tried ubuntu from the same USB and the same Laptop (which is able to boot from USB).

I thought that something with the Flash Drive not OK so I tried to use a windows installer to install puppy like other windows programms but this didn't work either. This time Puppy was recognized because there was an option to boot either Puppy or Windows 7 but when I chose to boot from Puppy nothing happens just a screen flash, some letters in the top left corner saying something like NTSC or NTSF (I can't read it properly because it goes away too fast) then after the screen flash the whole thing again (boot from win 7 or Puppy I choose Puppy again the flash... basically a loop).

Any ideas what I'm doing wron or what the problem is?

Im trying to break free from windows. just got puppy 4.3.1 and know nothing about linux . after trying a full install it will not reboot without cd in the drive, just says error loading operating system.My system has more than required amount of ram and almost 40 gig hd. have only 1 partition formated to ext2. could not figure how to use grub.

ps. also canot connect to wireless router

I am new to the installation of Linux, and wish to install 3 different distro's on the same hard disk.

I have installed Centos 7 successfully as follows :

The /boot is /dev/sda2

/dev/sda1 is listed as unknown so i assume it is the Master Boot Record with Grub installed. I do obtain the option to boot to the various kernels after updating the OS.

/dev/sda3 is a Linux LVM with the various partitions i required.

When i installed the CentOS 7 the installer stated an error about the bootable partition - which was effectively /boot, so i moved this to /dev/sda2.

What i am not sure about is that if i want to install 2 other Linux OS's will i run out of /dev/sdaX assignments ?.

I read somewhere that there are 4 maximum that can be used a /boot (SDA1, SDA2, SDA3, SDA4), so does this mean i can only install one other OS ?.

Tried to check other questions first, but didnt find any that were the same so here goes.....
Have an older pc with MSI motherboard: ms-7039 V 1.3. Other id's are N1996 and K9N6PGM2-V man. date 6/11/2008. Has bios v 9.1 simbios v 2.5 This is a 32bit.
Have formatted satas (plural because tried different drives to be sure not bad) in ntfs, partitioned according to instructions.
Have created 2 bootable usb's both 32bit, of ubuntu and mint. These both are fine as checked them on other machines so thats not the problem.
Can load win7 just fine, when go through install of these distros all goes well until says to reboot. Once reboot, loads up and either get 1. a fuzzy screen just with color 2. the screen with only icons on top right (ubuntu) sometimes mouse works sometimes not or 3. all icons top right and on left, but either mouse not work, moves in jerks and in both of these cases cannot click on icons.
Any ideas? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am very suprised! I previously had a Windows 7 desktop, dual boot with Windows Server 2012 R2. I didn't care much about 2012 R2, so I went with a Debian server on another computer.

I wanted to triple boot my computer, so I looked at my BIOS to see if my computer has UEFI support, but it doesnt, so I am not able to boot to GPT. One decision lead to another, and I decided not to install Hackintosh. As part of this process, I had converted it to GPT, and then back to MBR when installing Windows 8.1 Pro. Everything went well.

When I went to install Debian 7, it was not recognizing anything on that drive. I found out it was a backup GUID partition table left over. I used fixparts found on rodsbooks.com, and I fixed the disk partition table.

Now this is where things get weird. Before installing, I created a primary partition for /, and an extended partition with 5 logical partitions inside it. I installed Debian 7 from a live install DVD, and I manually created the partitions. I created a 4GB /, 16GB /usr, 4GB /var, and 64GB /home. Then I left a bunch of free space (~145GB) and then 16GB swap space. (I have 8GB ram, and I plan to hibernate sometimes).

After a successful installation, installation of packages, reboots, and frustration with PCI card problems, I rebooted to Windows 8.1.

Upon opening diskpart gui, I was greeted with the picture attached.

I have installed linux(mint and ubuntu) on a few laptops, but i have an ASUS eEEE netbook PC..Atom processor...No DVD drive...

I have chosen PUPPY Linux distro, and I have booted from a thumb a few times to make sure everything seems to work....but...when I start trying to install...well...its asking me about using the partition tool to change the types of partitions that are best for linux...

I am not understanding the instructions...as far as what i need to do...has anybody done this install ,,,the current netbook OS is Windows Starter 7. I just want to REPLACE it entirely with linux puppy. I did not encounter this on my laptop installs..i just said yes...replace the current OS..but somehow the netbook install is acting different....do i need to change the partitions or can i just take the defaults...I forge the exact partition extentsions..something line ntfs and it says to change to ext2 and ext3...not sure how to do that...

Can some direct me to the best way to do this? thx.

Can I execute freedos from puppy linux? I've just started using linux and I don't know any of the commands or its capabilities. I have freedos in a separate partition and I have grub4dos but I don't know how to configure it. Frugal Puppy linux boots fine from the grub4DOS.

Have Toshiba Tecra 64-bit 500gb disk 4gb ram running Windows 7 professional it has Intel core i5 processor.
I downloaded iso file of DVD LinuxMint Rebecca Cinnamon to DVD.
When I restart the system with the DVD inserted it immediately opens in Windows 7.
I could not follow the instructions to "disable secure boot and (u)efi".
Have partitioned the disk to allocate 100 gb to Linux in E:
First of all I really would like to run Live DVD and then later on to install it permanently it the E: partition.
Can I just simply copy the iso file into disk E:

I'm trying to install Debian 7.8 on my eMac G4 (700mhz, 640 Mb RAM). I've tried multiple methods but I keep running into problems one way or another. Since my eMac only has a Sony CD-RW drive and a busted Ethernet port I can't install from a DVD nor a netinstall CD which would be the easiest options unfortunately. First I tried using the multiple CD option, which seemed promising at first; until I had to swap to the next disk during "configure the package manager". it won't eject the CD when I use the eject key on my keyboard (imac g3 pro keyboard so I go back to the main menu and select the "eject a CD from the drive" option at the near bottom then things seem to get clustered. When I tried inserting the next disk, nothing else will install. It keeps telling me I need disk 1 again through every step. Then at the end, it tells me the installation is complete before I even install a desktop environment from the final CD. Then I just end up booting into garbled text and errors.

After all of that nonsense, I tried making a bootable USB from the DVD ISO with the OS X terminal. This method usually works with just about anything I've done before. However for some reason Debian apparently simply refuses to boot. As I tried selecting it on the boot menu on the start up, it gives me a black screen then goes straight back to the boot screen with disordered graphics. When I tried booting it from open firmware, it goes to the first screen, then when I hit enter to actually boot to the installer, nothing but errors. Finally I tried booting it straight from the ISO file on the hard drive, that method didn't even work at all.

Could someone point out what I'm doing wrong if possible or perhaps recommend me a different option?

I am new to linux but not new to PC's.

I am self taught in everything i know so far.

I have an issue i am looking for some guidance on, i have burned an ISO copy of AVLinux & booted from the Live DVD.

chose to install on partition & created all the necessary file systems etc with GParted then proceeded with the install.

Completed install but when i try to boot no joy.

I have EasyBCD installed on Vista to manage to boot processes.

I am able to get to Grub4dos window & grub> prompt.

I have tried many commands of which i have identifeid the partition is there as correct filesystem, when running the /vmlin....TAB command it locates the name of the linux distro, if i set the drive partition to makeactive it boots up saying no operating system them have to change it back to Vista.

I have two pics that show the grub configuration reading from the live DVD, the install appears to have some missing or not right as opposed to the DVD, can anyone assisst how i can fix this issue?

Do i have to copy each file over manually from the Live DVD's folders?
