Hi,
Right now on my system i have 5/6 users in my /etc/passwd file but all of them are in clear.
I know that normally encrypted passwords are in /etc/shadow and i know that the commands cryptpw and mkpasswd can be used to encrypt a string of character.
If for example an user is like this in passwd :
banana:lasagna:3:0:food:/:/bin/sh
Do i have to edit manually the shadow file with the encrypted string corresponding to "lasagna" here ? And what must i write in this shadow file ?
Thank you for the future answers !
Hi all,
I am slackware 14.0 user. Recently I face one problem. As a root i can change one of my normal user's (assuming Peter) password. However, when I login as Peter, and try to change the password, the system does not allow me to renew my password.
root@slackwa /etc# ls -la | grep shadow
-rw-r----- 1 root shadow 9 Nov 29 2013 gshadow
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Jun 20 2013 gshadow-
-rw-r----- 1 root shadow 2272 Apr 12 22:44 shadow
-rw------- 1 root root 2274 Apr 12 21:40 shadow-
root@slackwa /etc# ls -la | grep passwd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2362 Apr 12 12:58 passwd
-rw------- 1 root root 2306 Jan 8 17:38 passwd-
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2305 Aug 11 2014 passwd~
peter@slackwa ~$ which passwd
/usr/bin/passwd
peter@slackwa ~$ ls -la /usr/bin/passwd
-rws--x--x 1 root root 68725 Sep 14 2012 /usr/bin/passwd*
peter@slackwa ~$ passwd
Changing password for peter
Old password:
Incorrect password for peter.
The password for peter is unchanged.
One thing I can assure is the password I input is correct. I have another slackware 14 running on Dell R410, but it does not has this problem.
Please kindly advice. Thank you.
There is an option in encfs:
--extpass=program Use external program for password prompt
I want to use such program for this:
#!/bin/bash
zenity --entry --title="password dialog" --text="Enter your _password:" --hide-text
But how can I pass such obtained password to entfs call?
Any idea?

t is that the passwd I changed to will not log me in and I chaged the passwd twice to make sure that it was not a typing error.
I did manage to create an account that I am using but I cant update packages or do much with it.
I have read shadow pat to passwd file but I am not sure what I am supposed to do with the file.
I have a feeling its got to do with keys on his account but I dont know much about that to reset them.
Can anyone help me with that?
Hello,
I installed Mint 17 xfce onto a friend's HP netbook a few months ago. Up until now all has been working pretty perfectly.
From this evening, she tells me that after she types in her password the following message appears:
no exec. line in this session file [her password appears here in plain text!] running the GNOME failsafe session instead
The only option at this point is seemingly to click ok. After that, this message appears:
Could not find the GNOME installation will try running the failsafe xterm session
Again the only option is to click ok, then this appears for a few seconds:
Cannot find xterm start a failsafe session
Then it goes to a black screen (though you can see the mouse cursor) on which it stays indefinitely.
She tells me that she wasn't trying to do anything other than web browsing and email checking before this started happening so there doesn't seem to be any logical reason behind it. Does anybody have any idea what is happening and how to fix it?
Hello,
I have CentOS 6.5 deployed as a VM on VMware ESXi. I want to force user to force password change even when they use VMware's vSphere client to access the VM console.
I tried the following two commands -
Code:
chage -d 0 username
Code:
passwd -e username
These commands force password change only when we start a SSH session for that user, not if that user access the VM directly via the client console. How do I achieve a force password change even when it is accessed via the client console?
Thanks

On kali, how do i split a 15.7gb text file into 3 parts ? Also when i split the text file i don't want words to be incomplete from the split. Please help on how to exactly do it. Writing the exact commands to my specific situation would help me out a lot. Thanks in advance.
Hi, I forgot my password so went into root to change it.
From grub menu, Ubuntu : advanced options : ubuntu recovery : network : root
input passwd then typed in a new password and re-entered password. rebooted.
Tried to uninstall Firefox from software centre but the new password was not accepted for authentication.
Could anyone advise what the problem could be or suggest what I may have done wrong. The password appeared to be accepted ok in root. Thanks
