Help-Need To Access Files In Crashed Ubuntu Running In Windows 2008 Server HyperV

Help!! In 12.04.5 Ubuntu, the /boot directory was full and had a lot of duplicate files from different dates, some I thought were unnecessary headers of updates. However, one series of files was called vmlinuz-3.2.0-29-generic. I moved all the files to /obsolete_files. I rebooted after having trouble upgrading packages (I think this is a second problem with this machine). I now get the following prompt.
grub rescue>

Is there a way to access the directory system so that I can move those files back? I really only need to retrieve one or two files off the system.

Code:
grub rescue>ls
(hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos1) (fd0)

It doesn't under boot, or insmod. I can set prefixes. Am I doomed?

I have no idea how I'd "ensure there are no errors" in the /etc/grub related files... I have no idea what's supposed to be there. Looking at the line it's complaining about in /boot/grub/grub.cfg.new doesn't tell me anything. How do i find out what it's unhappy about?

Grub Directory Has Disappeared - Can't Reinstall Grub

I have tried installing a Ubuntu OS onto a partition (sda3).
When I had difficulties with the install, I decided to delete everything from the partition.

But now when I boot the computer, I get taken to the 'grub rescue' prompt.
I have tried to find grub in my other partitions (sda1 and sda2).
However, the command 'ls (hd0,msdos1)/' for example, does not show a grub directory.
It must've transferred grub to sda3 somehow and now I've deleted it.

I have debian live USB and am trying to install grub with:
Code:
apt-get install-grub /dev/sda

But I get the error message:
Code:
bash: grub-install: command not found

So now I don't know what's going on. Can anyone please help?

Deleted Partition With Deepin On It, Now Stuck In Grub Rescue Please Help.

Hi, yesterday I decided to install Deepin in a dual boot. I later decided I no longer needed/wanted it so I deleted the partition. Apparently I had grub on that partition as well, and now my laptop only goes to grub rescue and will not boot.
I have an acer aspire v5 touch. Removing the hard drive is not an option. I have tried to access UEFI but my computer just beeps and goes to grub rescue. I have grub rescue disk on a flash drive, I used unetbootin to do that, but iI cannot get to any boot menu (f12), and when I use ls (hd0)/ I get a unknown file system error. Please help, and sorry for my grammar/formatting, I'm on mobile.
Tl;dr: Deleted partition containing grub and deepin, now can only get to grub rescue, and I keep getting an unknown file system error, please help.

Add Files To A PXE Image

Hello,

I am new to Linux images (pxe, livecd). I would like to add files to a linux image, like something under etc or var, and have the files be available on the client.
The server I am working on was already configured with a pxe image, and only 2 files are present under the pxe client folder: initrd and vmlinuz. So I am wondering if either of these files contain the dirs /etc, /var, etc..., and how I could add files to them.

To give some background, I have done the same thing in Windows. An image in Windows is typically either boot.img or install.img. You can mount either of these to a folder using the Windows SDK tool imagex.exe /mountrw <img file> 1 <mount point>. From here you can add/remove/modify any files you want. Then commit the changes with imagex.exe /unmount <mountpoint> /commit.

Can someone provide insight to the linux image creation process, which of the files (initrd, vmlinuz/vmlinux, etc...) contain what for the client boot, or something similar to the Windows Image editing process?

I know I'm asking for a range of info, but pointers to any material to help my understanding will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

Tar Is Not Extracting All Files

Hi,

I have an tar.gz file which when right click extract here on my ubuntu computer is extracted without issue. I have all the folders and all the files (links and one executable) in them.
But when i transfert this tar.gz to another system and use the command :
Code:
tar zxvf nameofthefile.tar.gz

I see in the terminal things like that :
Code:
usr/bin/unzip/lzop
usr/bin/xargsbin/mountpoin
usr/bin/telnet
bin/pipe_prog
usr/bin/lzma
bin
usr/bin/sort

which mean that the files must be extracted but when using "ls" intot he folders they are empty. All the links are not here and only the executable is extracted.

When i copy back the archive from the new system to my ubuntu system and extract it all the files are here without issue. Why is it only creating the folders and not extracting the links ?

Dual-Booting: Grub Rescue Mode Woes - Help Please :)

Hello!

TL;DR: Deleted Linux partition from Windows. Stuck at Grub rescue prompt.

I'm sorry to trouble you guys, because I'm an idiot.

So I'm wanting to dual-boot Kalilinux and Windows 8.
I went through the steps such as creating a bootable USB, changing the
boot order and so on. I get into Kali, start Gparted and try to partition stuff.

I'm far from an expert, so I wasn't sure what to do. Long-story short, I
didn't seem to get Kali installed correctly, due to something with an EFI
drive being required. So I boot into windows and then stupidly, because it said in the guide, try to "uninstall" Kali by removing it's partition, inside Win8 haha... So I did.

Now I simply get the Grub rescue command prompt when I boot from the same
USB and I have no idea how to fix it. I've run bootrec.exe/fixmbr in Windows haha,
for what it's worth. However Grub can't find any partition it says.

In windows, I have like... 2-3 Recovery partitions. Does anyone know how to remove
them??? I've tried to clear as much as I can, besides the C drive and Auxillary D drive.

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Grub-pc Package Failed To Install On Dual Boot Windows 7 And Pinguy OS

After creating a bootable usb using Universal USB Installer. I booted up the sytstem (Dell Inspiron N4110) F12 boot on usb, did the install, everything went well until after copying files and then the error message that "The grub-pc package failed to install into /target.. So i continued without a boot loader and now am trying to figure out how to get it back.
Previously i did a perfect dual boot of Kali Linux wherein the Grub boot loader was present. I did however uninstall Kali, reclaim HDD space, and even use EasyBCD to remove Grub(i believe).
Also worth noting is that before this dual boot with pignuy and after uninstalling kali linux i did a complete reinstallation of my windows 7 system using the recovery HD.

Now i would like to know how i could get grub boot loader back onto my system so that i can boot up Pinguy OS. Thanks

Error Message Access A Ubuntu 15.04 Box From Windows 7

I am writing a C# application that reads all the directories and files on my Ubuntu web site and copies the changed files to my eSata drive on my workstation.

This is the code that reads all files and directories in my www folder.

System.IO.DirectoryInfo file1 = new System.IO.DirectoryInfo(pathA);
IEnumerable<System.IO.FileInfo> list1 = file1.GetFiles("*.*", System.IO.SearchOption.AllDirectories);

This is the error on my workstation accessing the web site after a few minutes.

A first chance exception of type 'System.IO.IOException' occurred in mscorlib.dll. Additional information: The specified network name is no longer available. f there is a handler for this exception, the program may be safely continued.

Any ideas on what is causing the network name to not be available. I can see the files on my Windows 7 workstation.
