The previous Debian versions had root terminal application that I could use with line commands that I could copy/paste. I cannot find that anymore in Debian, only XTerm which I cannot copy/paste text from it. Any idea what I could use?
When working with a virtual terminal, I find it often easier to edit a file to execute than to construct a regular-expression etc. to inject the right UUID etc. into the command. I have run into an error while doing this. I suspect it is stems from quote mishandling, or improper escape sequences. (I ran directly from the command line earlier, forgot a quotation mark, and it gave a similar bad result.)
The program in question was efibootmgr. I had a file vaguely similar to this one, named efiboot.Hz:
Code:
efibootmgr -c -g -L "Debian (EFI stub)" -l '\EFI\debian\vmlinuz' -u 'root=UUID=$UUID ro quiet rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap initrd=\\EFI\\debian\\initrd.img'
efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sdb -L "Debian Linux" -l '\EFI\debian\vmlinuz' -u 'root=UUID=1234-ffff-789 ro quiet rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap initrd=\\EFI\\debian\\initrd.img'
Then I executed:
Code:
`tail -n 1 efiboot.Hz`
efibootmgr -v revealed the previous command produced a garbled name and boot options, and most importantly it didn't boot. Manually writing the last line on the terminal did produce the desired effect. I thought I checked the output from tail before putting the back-ticks.
What did I do wrong?
Apologies. I've been out of Unix for 14 years, and the gears have rusted. Also, Unix has changed - enough similarities to memory that I'm pretty comfy though.
Glad to see lots of info available via google. However changes are going to take getting used to. Have set up a testbed of 3 nearly identical machines, hoping to make an (at home) private network where I can automate installs and set-ups using NIS and NFS (Similar to work I once did).
Have found useful scripts interspersed with comments, would like to copy and paste them to a bash script that:
Reads the line.
Echos the line.
Reads the reply.
Executes what is typed.
Essentially, by making myself type (or copy & paste) the commands I think I'll become familiar.
Figured I'd use a spreadsheet, select the file, and paste into column B of the spreadsheet. In column A I'd paste:
echo "
and in column C I'd paste:
"
Then I'd cut and paste into a text document, insert the lines:
read A
$A
behind every command necessary to the actual task.
Figured I'd have to escape the ' and ".
Ran a test (test.bash):
#!/bin/bash
for i in `seq 1 10`;
do
echo "Enter a command:"
read A
echo "Trying $A"
$A
done
works fine when I type
ls -alg
but not so when I type
ls -alg | grep dwrx
so I'm wondering if someone has a suggestion?
Thanks for any ideas.
I am using debian 7.7 stable and when I open the root terminal it asks for the password.
But if I open it again, I get the message: 'Granted permissions without asking for password. The /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator program was started with the privileges of the root user without the need to ask for a password, due to your system's authentication mechanism setup'.
Oh, really? Because I don't remember setting up any 'authentication mechanism setup'.
How can I change this so the root terminal always asks for the password?
Do I have a trojan already? Because I installed the OS just a few days ago.
Thanks very much.
I previously installed kdenlive in previous Debian versions with the suggested command:
apt-get install kdenlive frei0r-plugins dvgrab recordmydesktop dvdauthor genisoimage
but it gives error messages in debian 8 saying packages not available
maybe my sources.list is wrong?

What should I do?
I was trying to do an update using Update Manager and I got the error message:
No space left on device), E:IO Error saving source cache, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
I have attached a copy of my disk usage and it shows root as 100%. I thought that I had put the Home folder on it's own partition but I guess not.
I have also included the results of the ls -l command but fail to see what is using the space.
I am using LinuxMint Linux version 3.11-2-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.8.1 (Debian 4.8.1-10) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.11.8-1 (2013-11-13)
Thanks for your help in advance.

Would anyone be willing to share their knowledge on: How to compile and install Linux Kernel 3.19 in Debian jessie?
So the new kernel is out and I've been patiently waiting for its release for the support of Microsoft Surface peripherals. I recently switched over to Debian because I'm not fond of some of the moves Ubuntu is making. So thats the short story, and fundamentally unimportant to the question.
Considering my lack of experience with Linux, or should I say others extensive experience, please be as detailed as you care to be. I did end up finding instructions containing 4 or so lines with 3 or so words in each line, buried in some website, but the information wasn't sufficient for me to follow. Needless to say those instructions were for someone who didn't need the specific terminal commands which I certainly do.

Thank You.
Hi I am new to linux kernel programming.
To debugging kernel I am using Debian-Squeeze.
Actually "apt-get install gcc" occur some errors in Debian
When I use ifconfig there is no ethernet so that I guess Internet is
unavailable even if there is internet connection
Below is my screenshot from terminal.
Please somebody help me.
Thanks.
