Upgrading Hardware In Mandrake 9.2

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening

As my subject line states I am trying to upgrade the MOBO/CPU/RAM on a system that has Mandrake 9.2 as the OS. Everything is terribly outdated on it, but unfortunately the OS is running a custom program that I did not develop and talking to the developer seems to be an impossible task. I have no working knowledge of any Linux based OS, so I am trying to get pointed in the right direction on possible troubleshooting that may occur. The system is not connected to the internet so it wont be able to automatically update the necessary drivers that I already know. I haven't gone forward with the upgrades as of yet, one because I am waiting on the CPU to arrive and two because my lack of knowledge makes me hesitant. I know that someone is thinking why not just upgrade the OS, the reason behind that is because I am unsure on if the custom software will even run on it. Any help would be appreciated.

tl;dr
Will I be able to just plug and play the new hardware as long I have the correct drivers?

Usb Boot Disk Created For Linux Mint 17.1?

Good evening;
Following instructions on-line I attempted to create a bootable USB drive (32GB Sandsik extreme) with Linux 17.1 installed to enable a trial before attempting a permanent install beside windows 7 on a new computer with Win7 prof. installed.

On the usb I see a 4.0 GB area highlighted in G Parted but not accessible from the Linux file manager. This shows up as a ~1.4 GB sub-directory titled casper. and also as 4.0 GB 'file' named casper-rw. Can anyone explain what is the purpose of this sub-directory? The software I used to create the usb bootable drive and install Linux to is 'Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.5.9'. This is a windows executable. My intent was to create a bootable usb drive for Linux that also contained my required hardware drivers, etc. This doesn't appear to be working 100%; although Linux 17.1 boots the nvidia hardware drivers do not appear to be available even though I downloaded these and they are on the same usb. On boot-up a message box indicates that hardware acceleration is not enabled and higher than normal processor usage may occur.

Any assistance / direction, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Video Hardware Acceleration HP Zv5000 N-videa

I recently installed Linux Mint 17 on my HP Pavilion zv5000. There is a non-closable dialog box which states:

"Running in software rendering mode
Cinnamon is currently running without video hardware acceleration and, as a result, you may observe much higher than norman CPU usage.
There could be a problem with your drivers or some other issue. For the best experience, it is recommended that you only use this mode for troubleshooting purposes"

It does run much slower than it did with XP H.E.

Does anyone here know of a solution to this issue? Any help will be appreciated.

I Need To Learn How To Install Software On Linux.

Hi. Sorry to be so stupid, but I just managed to load and install this Linux (which I really like a lot) on my previously windows <--(bad) system.
But now I need to upgrade some software (like Adobe flash), and I have no clue how to do this. I understand I should go to my original linux distrubutor, and select software thru them (my "Linux distro").
But actually, it's been awhile since I did the install, and I dont exactly remember where I even got this distribution. (I know, I'm dumb--sorry).
Is there a way I can look at my linux system files and see who my distribution is thru, and where is their website. Or would it be easier if I just went thru the whole download and install of linux again <--(not really looking forward to that).
Or even, am I wrong about going thru the distro to do installs/upgrades?
Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated.

Please Help Me Develop My Laptop Into Something Better.

I have a Dell Latitude E5440. It currently is Running Windows 7 pro. I want to change this machine into a customized Linux Workstation. In order to that right I need to get all my device drivers copied from Dells Website I want to then figure out if these drivers would work for linux.
I then want to create a virtual windows desktop to run all and not limited to:

Microsoft visual Studio
Ableton live (DAW)
Auto Desk Inventor
Mentor Graphics PAD
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Premier
Red Giant Special Effects suites (various)
Quark Express
ICOM Radio Programming software
Microsoft Office
Just to name a few programs I want to run on my windows virtual desktop.
I wont ever take the virtual desktop online. I also want to have a highly secured system where permissions have to be signed for anything. Meaning that my windows desktop is virtually helpless in screwing with the rest of my system.

SO I will need a good open source O.S. and many links for the device drivers I need and how to change them to work.

Please explain things clearly with precise directions and links. I haven't flashed my bios yet and installed DBAN. I will when I feel I have all my ducks in a Row and I am ready to create a monster laptop. please email me directly

Clone A Bootable CF Card With Multiple Partitions And Copy To Bigger Drive

Hi, all, I am new to the forum and quite new to Linux, I am running Mint and Kali from a USB drive, all is going well with with the software and I am starting to find my way around it.

So, now to my question, I have 15 machines which all run from a CF card and the card has multiple partitions and is a Windows Embedded XP, not that the operating system makes any difference, I need to upgrade all the CF cards from 2gb to 4gb, so unfortunately Windows isn't an option to use to copy the drives as it doesn't recognise multiple partitions on a removable drive, so I cant just remove the drive, clone it and fit the new one.

What I need is a method of cloning the drive completely with both partitions, I have read about dd but cant seem to see anything about doing this with multiple partitions, as Linux sees it as two drives when I plug it in, how can I use dd or anything else to clone the drive which is bootable and has two partitions?

At some point I would like to automate the process as I could have many of these machines/drives to upgrade, is there a way to write a program that will automatically back up the drives from a USB drive and then reinstall it, I have seen this done before but I am not sure if this method did the whole drive, just the main drive or all partitions?

I Need Tips About Where To Find Knowledge.

I want to modificate a Linux distro but i haven't knowledge for this.
What i want to do is put it in a machine and let it in a public place. It should have keyboard so people can type the things as they want. But i cant allow shortcuts, terminal or tty to be opened by this keyboard. I am thinking about 2 keyboards with different permissions. To the mouse my idea is touchscreen.I should also make a good gui so it can be more pleasant to the people. And as the idea grows i want to add more features. But i really lack knowledge to do so. Could someone give me tips of books to guide me trough this path?

Install Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 802.11 B/g/n Drivers On Hp Pavlion Dv7 Laptop

i have an hp pavilion dv7 laptop and i installed openmandrivalx 14.1 x64 on it and cannot configure the wireless intel centrino wireless n-2230 adapter. Have downloaded the iwlwifi drivers but cannot install because the system cannot resolve the $MIRRORLIST problem.
This occurs on all mandriva based linux systems i hahe tried mageia with the same result. Mageia cannot even recognise the centrino adapter.
Ubuntu based linux systems install on the fly.
What good is an operating system in the modern era that you cannot connect to the internet seamlessly?

Programs To Be Run On Boot (and Other Events)

Hello everybody and thanks always for the help

I think the question I am about to ask is very beginners like, so I would appreciate the help.

I know (although I don't remember right now) there is a way to run a program on boot. I think it involves rc.local (correct me if I am wrong) I think you can put there the processes that you want to be run everytime linux is rebooted.

My question is, what should I do if I want a program to be run everytime some other event happen? For example (and in concrete) I am using a camera connected to my linux system and I want a program to run everytime I unplug and replug the camera through the USB port.

Can someone share his/her knowledge with me on this point

Thanks a thousand
