Help Modifying Text With User Input

Hello,

I apologize in advance for my limited UNIX scripting knowledge. I am new to it and really want to learn.

I am trying to write a bash script that updates a config file based on user input.

What is the best method for accomplishing this? I need it to prompt the user for two variables, find the location in the config file, and insert new text with the two variables.

I was thinking I could use sed to find the text in the config file where the new text must be inserted before and replace it with the new text, two variables, and same ending text as before. Example:

echo "1st variable?"
read variable1

echo "2nd variable?"
read variable2

sed -e "s|<the spot in the config file that needs new config>|sometext...$variable2_somemoretext...$variable1\n<the spot in the config file that needs new config>|g" config > config2

This works except variable2 is not inserted into the replace string, only variable1 is. This is the result in config2:

sometext..._somemoretext...$variable1
<the spot in the config file that needs new config>

If anyone can tell me why variable2 isn't working in the sed replace string, or if there's a much better way for accomplishing what I'm after, I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Trouble Configuring Vsftp

Using a Raspberry Pi w/ Debian

Read the manual and several "how-to"s and am getting nowhere

vsftp is running and making a log file. I can get to the Pi with putty or SAMBA

Ultimately want to be able to both(I) ftp in under the "pi" user to access files remotely and (II) have people sending me huge files ftp them in anonymously

Have tried (I) the ftp client in Windows 7 Internet explorer 11, (ii) the ftp client in the Windows 7 "map network drive" UI, and (iii) ES file explorer on my Android phone.

The android phone tells me there is no server there. Windows 7 gets no password challenge, gives no error indication, but does nothing useful. The vsftpd log file shows some attempt by the Windows machine, nothing for the Android.

Config file and log file attached.

The Android is trying to use port 21, the config file mentions something about port 20. Which ports do I need to forward in my router to enable remote access?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks. Jonathan

Undefined Symbol In Preprocessor In Mixed C/Asm Build

Hi,
I am trying to understand MPlayer, and am currently rebuilding some of its source code which includes C and asm files.

Most of the preprocessor symbols are defined in the config.h file, created by the configure script.

In the C files, these symbols are visible in the source by including the config.h header file.

However, in the asm files, I don't see any of such inclusion. Since the asm files also use these preprocessor symbols (e.g. ARCH_X86_64), how are they made visible during the build of the asm files?

When I try building the asm source myself, I get many errors such as:
undefined symbol `ARCH_X86_64' in preprocessor

I was wondering how this is to be done, or if someone knows specifically how this is done in the Mplayer build ?

Again, many thanks for any help you can provide!

PD.

(mv ~/.config ~/.config.org) Ruined My FPS In Games

Hey just signed up after lurking for a bit.

I'm using Mint 17.1 and following the advice in this post to solve my missing menu problem which worked fine.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...5/#post4234891

But now after using Code:
mv ~/.config ~/.config.org

my FPS in a steam game went down from 70 to 30.

I did some re-installations in my package manager, but the FPS still sucks.

Fstab And Auto Mounting

am i right in saying that fstab only describes to the system what partitions should be mounted to what device (location) i know it can do a bit more than that...

but how do you get the system to mount file systems automatically at start up? is that a setting within fstab? under mount options...or is it a command that you need to type...or is it in another config file?

.Xdefaults Is Empty!

I'm running Arch with i3. I'm trying to config xterm and realized that I didn't have a .Xdefaults file in my home directory. I saw in a forum that someone did

Code:
$ cd ~
$ touch ~.Xdefaults

I did that and it made a .Xdefaults file in my home folder but it is empty and I don't know what to do.

Modifying An XML File But Saving A Copy First. Unexpected Results

I've worked with Linux in the past, but mostly Windows. Perhaps someone can explain what I am seeing. This isn't a Linux OS, but Tomcat running under Windows. I'm thinking Linux rules apply here, but if this is the wrong forum, I apologize in advance.

I've got an app that runs under Tomcat. I needed to modify an XML config file to change a variable. The path was \app\tomcat\webapps\asset-manager-web\WEB-INF\am\conf\settings. The file was configParams.xml.

To protect myself from messing things up, I first made a copy of configParams.xml and named it configParams-ORIG.xml. I left this in the same folder as the file I was going to edit. I made the required edits and restarted the application service. The app never recognized the changes. Finally, I moved the configParams-ORIG.xml file to another folder, restarted, and everything worked.

Can someone explain why this is? I do this in Windows all the time. Why does having that original file, renamed, in the same folder cause a problem?

Need Help With Shell Script

3. For a file name, display the first _lines of the file

Show .hidden .files On Open... And Browse... Dialogs In Xubuntu/xfce

I am running xubuntu 11.10, fully updated, on an Acer 250 netbook (1GB ram, 1.8 GHz clock, single core Atom processor, if you can believe it). Runs pretty well, I think. So much so that I have decided to migrate from Windows to Linux.

My first question to the forum is this: I have set the Thunar file explorer to show hidden files. However, hidden files still don't show up on various File Open or Browse... dialogs.

How can I set up xfce or xubuntu to always display .hiddenfiles in Open... or Browse... dialogs?

Problem comes up when I want to edit some .config file or run the alacarte Main Menu editor and have to specify some long path to an executable in a hidden directory (as in wine). I have to enter the file name manually, which gets to be a problem for my thumb-fingered typing.
