I am a student at local comm college. the course I am taking is ITN 171 Unix. The book for the class is Guide to UNIX Using Linux...by Micahel Palmer, ISBN-13: 978-1-4188-3723-5. it comes with a CD to install Fedora onto my laptop. My laptop does not jhave a cd/dvd drive, but I borrowed my brothers LG Slim portable DVD writer- Model# SP60NB50. There is a file on my computer now under devices and drives: DVD Drive(D Fedora-Live-WS-x...if I click on it to open up, i see folders: EFI, isoliniux and LIVEOS...
there is nothing that to install...? I am confused and need to have Fedora and Knoppix to do my course work..any help or advice would be greatly appreciated
and yes i even went to fedroaproject.org and tried to download this........

im doing thesis on Unix systems history and right now Im searching for major changes between versions 3.x to 4.x and mabe some future 4+.
I know i can find everything he http://kernelnewbies.org/LinuxVersions but its too damn long so if anyone could save me hours of time and point out the major changes i would be very happy!

Okay so I am having major issues getting python to work on Ubuntu 12.04 and other programs I want to run exclusively on this system. Just so you all know - I do not understand computer lingo much so I have a million definitions and how to's . I've kind of been thrown in the deep end on something and the I.T. guru (sorry for the frustration - but effectively this boso worked for MY company) belittled me basically calling me stupid & incapable of being able to configure a basic desktop system.

Anyways my ex from years ago also worked in I.T and played with different operating systems at 1 point so I had used Linux before and remembered it was geared to what I needed. I have installed 12.04 (trialled the latest 14 version as well but opted for the older one for more guidance. So I have everything I need for what I am doing except for 1 minor detail. I am so confused on entering the command lines

can anyone guide me to where there's a really simple straight forward guide to getting 2 programs to run and python to work? I know it's just entering command prompts so to speak but I can't get them to work or know the file directories for the locations of the programs.

i have an hp pavilion dv7 laptop and i installed openmandrivalx 14.1 x64 on it and cannot configure the wireless intel centrino wireless n-2230 adapter. Have downloaded the iwlwifi drivers but cannot install because the system cannot resolve the $MIRRORLIST problem.
This occurs on all mandriva based linux systems i hahe tried mageia with the same result. Mageia cannot even recognise the centrino adapter.
Ubuntu based linux systems install on the fly.
What good is an operating system in the modern era that you cannot connect to the internet seamlessly?

installed digiKam 4:3.5.0-Oubuntu 10 and dependent packages from Synaptic Package Manager.

I have used digiKam successfully in previous versions of Ubuntu.

(In your LQ tutorial you refer to using 'how-tos' -where are these?-and search for occurence of 'digikam' - have attempted this without success)

(Your tutorial suggests I introduce myself - I have used Ubuntu for many years but only in GUI. My Unix knowledge is near zero - whenever I attempt to understand descriptions in the forums I get stumped by acronyms and terms that are common to other Linux users)

I have a machine with two drives a Compact Flash card (CF) and a Solid State Drive (SSD). Recently I have been experiencing failures of both the SSD and the CF.

When I sent these back to the manufacturer for analysis, they reported that the SSDs and CDs are healthy - but that it appears that the partition table has become corrupt.

Using a Kickstart I created my Linux machine with the partitions split over the CF (to hold the operating system) and the SSD (to hold my data):
/ on the CF
/boot on the CD
/usr on the CF
/home on the SSD
Would Unix have an issue with using the CF to boot and run the operating system and using the SSD to store files?
Has anyone experienced any issues of this kind?

what does navigation /../demo will mean ?

does it mean we go to / first , then which path ?

I have a Dell Latitude E5440. It currently is Running Windows 7 pro. I want to change this machine into a customized Linux Workstation. In order to that right I need to get all my device drivers copied from Dells Website I want to then figure out if these drivers would work for linux.
I then want to create a virtual windows desktop to run all and not limited to:

Microsoft visual Studio
Ableton live (DAW)
Auto Desk Inventor
Mentor Graphics PAD
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Premier
Red Giant Special Effects suites (various)
Quark Express
ICOM Radio Programming software
Microsoft Office
Just to name a few programs I want to run on my windows virtual desktop.
I wont ever take the virtual desktop online. I also want to have a highly secured system where permissions have to be signed for anything. Meaning that my windows desktop is virtually helpless in screwing with the rest of my system.

SO I will need a good open source O.S. and many links for the device drivers I need and how to change them to work.

Please explain things clearly with precise directions and links. I haven't flashed my bios yet and installed DBAN. I will when I feel I have all my ducks in a Row and I am ready to create a monster laptop. please email me directly
